The Germantown Student Senate Elections Are In and Here Are The Results

By Grace Agbali

The Covid-19 pandemic hasn’t stopped Montgomery College students from continuing their education and getting involved in any college-related event. On April 15, the election of the new Germantown Student Senate was concluded. This election was special in itself because of the candidates. Indeed, the candidates for this election are all from early college programs and are all women.

The winners are President-elect Nikki Faroughi, Vice President-elect Geleta Mertinu, Secretary-elect Jasmine Cox, and Treasurer-elect Noelle Hailu.

Despite their young age, this new Senate seems ready to meet the challenges that await it to help students. “I know I’m only 17, but I think I can make a difference and bring more opportunities, new perspectives for students,” said Faroughi. “I have already had some experiences in [student government] since I held it in my high school,” said Hailu.

Being close to students will not be easy due to this pandemic, but the Senate intends to do everything possible to help and even improve the lives of students. “We want to be more connected and more involved in the lives of students,” said Hailu.

The plan is to stay close to the students and their concerns and to bring everyone together. “We want to help solve any student problem. We want students to be able to tell us what is on their minds and what troubles them,” says Faroughi. “We want to create a sense of community in these challenging times,” said Mertinu. It will be a challenge for the new Senate to follow the earlier officers, but they seem ready.

“It will not be easy to do better than the old senate,” confirmed Faroughi, “but we want to take up the challenge. “The senate intends to organize new activities for the students. “As treasurer, my goal is to manage the budget in order to create more activities and even new ones in these times of crisis,” added Hailu

It appears that the Germantown campus is well cared for. Let us now hope that this new Senate will keep its goals as long as they remain.
