It has been almost a month since the Minecraft movie teaser dropped and was not received particularly well by fans. For those who don’t know, Minecraft is a beloved game that has been around since 2011.
Minecraft is a sandbox game that lets you explore a vast, blocky world where you can gather resources, build structures, and create your own adventures. You can mine materials like wood and stone, craft tools and items, and construct anything from simple homes to complex cities.
The game has different modes: in **Survival**, you gather resources and manage health and hunger while facing creatures such as zombies and skeletons. In **Creative** mode, you have unlimited resources and can fly, making it easy to focus on building without any threats.
The world is made up of various biomes, like forests, deserts, and oceans, each with its own unique features and creatures. You can play alone or with friends, collaborate on projects, or explore custom worlds created by other players. Minecraft encourages creativity, problem-solving, and exploration, making it a unique experience for every player.
The timeline of the Minecraft movie is long and messy. In 2012, Mojang Studios, the developer of the game, was already getting offers from Hollywood producers about movie prospects. Mojang declined their offers as they waited for the right idea to come along. . In 2014, they started talking with Warner Bros about a movie.
In October of that year, the director Shawn Levy was hired. You might know that name as he recently came out with the critically acclaimed film Deadpool and Wolverine. Then only months later he left the project along with some writers who were also working on the movie.
In 2015 the director Rob McElhenney was hired. He began the production of the film in 2016, to the point of getting Steve Carell a contract to play a character in the movie. Due to conflicting schedules, he left the film franchise in 2018.
In 2019 Peter Sollett was hired as director and writer. The production process of the Minecraft movie started all over again. At this point, the movie is set to come out in 2022 but unfortunately, COVID-19 happens and delays production. Sollett ends up directing another project and leaves the Minecraft movie.
Once again, they hired another director, Jared Hess. This director ended up sticking and the Minecraft movie script was rewritten for the 5th time. Legendary Entertainment joins the movie to co-produce.
Talks with Jason Mamoa began as the idea of playing a role for the movie was coming into fruition.. Then finally in 2023, the movie was announced to come out April 5th, 2025, and they dropped a teaser on September 4th, 2024.
This movie has gone through a lot of changes and has taken years to make it. Many fans, including myself, are excited to see a movie about the world of Minecraft. One of the main
concerns that Minecraft players have is “Why is this movie live-action?”.
Since the beginning of Minecraft talented players have created animations for the game that has become an iconic style in the Minecraft community. Because of this many players thought the movie would be done in the same style. In the Minecraft live on September 28th they go into why they made it live-action and other aspects of the movie.
Olafsson, the creative director for entertainment at Mojang Studios said, “We thought a lot about what kind of movie to do, and we chose live action because it’s not something that’s been seen before on this scale.” As understandable as that might be, it doesn’t change the minds of the people who don’t like the character design of the Minecraft mobs.
Some people want the studio to change the animation; similarly to what happened with the Sonic movie. After the change in Sonics animation, the movie was a huge success to the point of having a 3rd movie come out. The studio changing the animation is not very likely. As much criticism as the fans are giving the movie, I’m sure plenty of them will still watch it.
It’s important to remember that this movie is aimed at children, and most kids aren’t particularly concerned with animation styles. Fans often overlook the fact that just because they grew up with a game, it doesn’t mean the game has evolved with them. Even though something might be marketed towards children it shouldn’t stop anyone from trying to enjoy it. We were all kids once. So, no matter the criticism, if you want to watch this movie, GO. Go form your own opinion about the movie and you might even enjoy it.
