JPEGMAFIA delivers a stellar performance, rockin’ at The Fillmore venue and igniting the atmosphere in the Silver Spring area on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.
Delivering groundbreaking music since 2008, JPEGMAFIA has made a name for himself in the modern hip hop scene as an experimentalist, not afraid to push the envelope if it means the progression of creative freedoms. JPEGMAFIA or “ Peggy” as his fans would call him is a Flatbush, Brooklyn native who would see himself moving across the United States to eventually land in Baltimore where he would begin to find and refine his style of music. From choppy 808’s to sampling old japanese commercials, JPEGMAFIA would create a niche for himself that would receive great reception from fans around the world. Seeing himself collaborate with the likes of Denzel Curry on songs such as “ BALD!”, “JPEGULTRA” and “VENGEANCE” would only be the beginning of a lengthy career that Peggy would find himself being in.
With the release of his 5th album “I Lay Down My Life For You”, JPEGMAFIA would go on to tour around the United States which would land him in Silver Spring, Maryland. With no time to waste, high school seniors and college students all alike would rush to ticketmaster and purchase tickets. Fans would flood the room as the floors trembled, thundering bass reverberated through bodies in the tightly packed venue. Each of us side by side like a case of water, all hopping and shouting in unison, “PEGGY, PEGGY, PEGGY !“ The crowd’s anticipation continued to build as red, foggy smoke flooded the stage, signaling JPEG’s presence. Before we knew it, an acoustic guitar sliced through the chants as a silhouette would emerge from the screen of smoke. Fitted in a cowboy hat, as his trench coat flapped with each step he took, it was JPEGMAFIA in the flesh.
“My name is JPEG-muthaf**kin-Mafia and I’ve come all the way here just to do a few songs for ya’ll, if that’s okay”. He told the crowd. “I don’t have much to yap about, so, we’re gonna get right into it.” He said.
The stage lights shot a purple hue as the crowd rumbled in anticipation for the first song, “Jesus Forgive Me, I Am A Thot.” Although the song’s energy was on the lower end of the scale, the fans swayed their bodies and arms all together as they sang each line word for word, bringing a hypnotic feel to The Fillmore. Wide eyed teens and young adults would fall into one another as the next song that would play would elicit a strong reaction from the masses. “Lean Beef Patty,”a song named after a popular gym content creator, would garner great reception as it is a collaborative effort with Detroit rapper Danny Brown. Beloved by many, a domino effect would happen as the energy in the venue elevated, arms flailing, teeth showing, mouths agape, excitement filled the room.
“ Said he all about free speech
til’ he heard some shit and then get offended ( uh, let’s go !)
This ain’t what you want! ( let’s go !) no, this ain’t what you want !”
– JPEGMAFIA
The crowd would rap along with every lyric as the room stretched and bounced with movement from every corner of the venue. The energy was palpable as sweat overcame the brows of many with the exciting production blaring through the speakers with each bass drop having the force of a blast radius. The night would continue to deliver non-stop action as JPEGMAFIA would play songs from previous albums that fans would grow to love such as “BALD !”, “Baby I’m Bleeding”, “Garbage Pail Kids” and “1539 N. Calvert.”
The night would be filled with laughter and glee as crowd surfing teens engraved memories that would last a lifetime, JPEGMAFIA would continue to immerse the crowd with his captivating and aggressive lyrics, etching himself as a performer worth watching. When all was said and done, Peggy would go on to perform his final song titled “It’s Dark And Hell is Hot,”a song named after an album made by the late great DMX, off of his latest album.
As the show would come to a close, the fans would rush the merch line to get their hands on leftover merch that was available. To the surprise of many, JPEGMAFIA pre-signed vinyl copies of his critically acclaimed LP “ Veteran” which caught the attention of those in attendance. Not only did JPEGMAFIA deliver with his outstanding performance and stage set, but would also leave a core memory for first time attendees of a Peggy concert fortunate enough to get their hands on such memorabilia. JPEGMAFIA will continue to go on tour as he works his way to other continents to wow the masses, don’t forget to buy your tickets while supplies last ! You don’t want to miss this performance !
